Ilo Battigelli nasce a San Daniele del Friuli nel 1922. Si trasferisce giovanissimo a Santa Margherita Ligure, dove compie l’apprendistato presso lo studio dello zio Ernesto, noto fotografo, attivo dapprima in Friuli e, dopo la Grande Guerra, alla quale partecipa nelle squadre fotografiche dell’Esercito, in Liguria.

A sedici anni, dopo una breve parentesi come gestore, nella sua città natale, della succursale dello studio fotografico bujese Barnaba, Ilo raggiunge, con la madre ed i fratelli, il padre Marziale ad Asmara, in Eritrea, allora Africa Orientale Italiana. Il giovane fotografo friulano freelance collabora con il Corriere eritreo e la Compagnia Foto Milano.

Gli eventi bellici lo vedono ancora in Eritrea, dove è trattenuto come prigioniero sino al 1946 quando, assieme a numerosi connazionali si trasferisce in Arabia Saudita, dove partecipa alla costruzione degli impianti petroliferi dell’ARAMCO a Ras Tannurah. Ed è proprio nel Golfo Persico che inizia l’epopea di Ilo il Pirata, lo pseudonimo da lui scelto e mantenuto durante tutta la sua vita di fotografo professionista. Degli otto anni di soggiorno in Arabia Saudita ci rimane una serie di rare immagini di paesaggio e una vasta galleria di ritratti, da quelli dei beduini a quelli dei governanti locali.

Nel 1954 Ilo Battigelli lascia l’Arabia Saudita e inizia un lungo viaggio che lo porta in Terra Santa, in Medio Oriente, in Turchia, in Grecia, e, passando per l’Italia, negli Stati Uniti. Viaggio interrotto dalla notizia di una grave malattia della madre. Tornato in Italia, in Friuli e a Genova, dove lo zio Ernesto aveva nel frattempo trasferito la sua attività, Ilo sente però il richiamo dell’Africa e nel 1957 riprende la sua avventura trasferendosi a Salisbury in Rhodesia.

Dopo un primo periodo di ambientamento, il Pirata viene messo sotto contratto dall’IMPRESIT che sul fiume Zambesi costruisce la diga di Kariba. Ilo non si limita a documentare il capolavoro di ingegneria idraulica ma, con grande sensibilità, entra nel mondo dei Tonga e fotografa la vita degli indigeni costretti a lasciare i loro villaggi poi inondati dal bacino della diga.

A Salisbury, che ora si chiama Harare ed è la capitale dello Zimbabwe, Ilo apre nel 1960 uno studio che continua la sua attività sino al 1996.

Numerose mostre e premi nel corso degli anni ed altri riconoscimenti puntualizzano la sua attività fino a raggiungere, nel 1964, il più ambito riconoscimento alla Mostra Internazionale di New York dove su 130.000 fotografie a colori inviate da tutto il mondo si vede premiare tutte e quattro le foto presentate. Nel 1968, l’Illustrated Life Rhodesian gli dedica la copertina della rivista e un ampio servizio antologico della sua attività. Il Rhodesia Herald nel 1970 rende omaggio ai suoi 40 anni spesi al servizio della fotografia dedicandogli la pagina centrale. Nel 1980, la National gallery of Zimbabwe presenta una sua antologica di 350 fotografie.

Ilo Battigelli was born in San Daniele del Friuli in 1922. He moved very young to Santa Margherita Ligure, where he completed his apprenticeship at the studio of his uncle Ernesto, a well-known photographer, first active in Friuli and, after the Great War, in which he participated in the teams photographs of the Army, in Liguria.

At the age of sixteen, after a brief period as manager, in his hometown, of the branch of the Bujese photographic studio Barnaba, Ilo joins, with his mother and brothers, his father Martial in Asmara, in Eritrea, then Italian East Africa. The young freelance photographer from Friuli collaborates with the Corriere Eritreo and the Compagnia Foto Milano.

The war events still see him in Eritrea, where he was held as a prisoner until 1946 when, together with numerous compatriots, he moved to Saudi Arabia, where he participated in the construction of the ARAMCO oil plants in Ras Tannurah. And it is in the Persian Gulf that the epic of Ilo the Pirate begins, the pseudonym he has chosen and maintained throughout his life as a professional photographer. Of the eight years of stay in Saudi Arabia we are left with a series of rare landscape images and a vast gallery of portraits, from those of the Bedouins to those of local rulers.

In 1954 Ilo Battigelli left Saudi Arabia and began a long journey that took him to the Holy Land, the Middle East, Turkey, Greece, and, passing through Italy, to the United States. Journey interrupted by the news of a serious illness of the mother. Returning to Italy, Friuli and Genoa, where his uncle Ernesto had meanwhile transferred his business, Ilo felt the call of Africa and in 1957 he resumed his adventure by moving to Salisbury in Rhodesia.

After an initial period of acclimatization, the Pirate is put under contract by IMPRESIT which builds the Kariba dam on the Zambezi River. Ilo does not limit himself to documenting the masterpiece of hydraulic engineering but, with great sensitivity, enters the world of the Tonga and photographs the life of the indigenous people forced to leave their villages then flooded by the dam basin.

In Salisbury, which is now called Harare and is the capital of Zimbabwe, Ilo opened a studio in 1960 which continued its activity until 1996.

Numerous exhibitions and awards over the years and other awards highlight his activity until he reached, in 1964, the most coveted recognition at the New York International Exhibition where out of 130,000 color photographs sent from all over the world he was awarded all four photos submitted. In 1968, Illustrated Life Rhodesian dedicated the cover of the magazine to him and a large anthological report of his activity. The Rhodesia Herald in 1970 pays homage to his 40 years spent in the service of photography by dedicating the center page to him. In 1980, the National gallery of Zimbabwe presented his anthology of 350 photographs.
